Doom-Lolz of the week | 24/09/2022

The week started bad and went downhill from there. But at least we were able to punctuate the sobbing with a few hysterical cackles (albeit with our hands over our faces and indeed indecipherable at times from the sobbing itself).

Putin kicked us off with a non-ironic effort to launch a Russian-backed referendum, causing - as you can imagine - all kinds of devoid-of-self-awareness responses from the Brexit Right. How can we just sit back and let Putin fire an assault on another country's sovereign, Democratic processes, Flag Twitter frothed, without a smidgen of irony.

So, this week he was on C4 News questioning the legitimacy of the Ukraine referenda. And he was by no means alone. You didn't have to go too deep into the weeds of Twitter Monday to find the flag-fucking lunatics, ready to climb in their spitfires it.. But frankly, the WelshTash summed the situation up perfectly.

Next up was everyone's favourite payment service from 2004, Paypal!

Paypal found themselves - against all the odds - being talked about in 2022; for shutting down the payment mechanism for a couple of political lobby groups. And one of those, it turns out, was Free Speech Union, the vaccine-sceptic, lockdown-sceptic website setup by nepotism's, Toby Young. It's still not clear what he was using it for? Getting people to donate to it? Flogging "I Only Kiss Purebloods" merch?
Fun to see the same guy who couldn't bring himself to protect Steve Bray's Freedom of Expression now on the receiving end of Paypal's though. Indeed, as the New Statesman said in reaction: how come these fucking idiots wank themselves limp about the right to withdraw services when some elderly couple don't want to bake a gay cake, but if Paypal do something similar, it's Cancel Culture? (paraphrasing, slightly).
Top of the list of unexpected enter stage Rights was comedian, Jack Dee, who jumped on Twitter to tell everyone he'd cancelled his Paypal account then and there. Wow, this cancel culture thing goes levels deep, huh. What happens when someone cancels their Patreon in support of my podcast because I cancelled my Jack Dee tickets in response to his cancelling his Paypal account because Paypal cancelled Toby Young's merch store? How far can this go? Is there a Guinness Book of Records thing for the longest daisy-chain of them yet?

To be honest, I assumed that'd be it. Big Tech's rein over. Silicon Valley CEOs and Ethics Committees would re-assemble in a PR-panic because a British comedian they'd never heard of had started paying his mates back by cheque. But no, turns out not everyone took it seriously..

Finally, the BEST news of the week was the announcement that the Trump Organisation are being sued to oblivion.

The claims in the suit reflect long-held rumours that Trump is actually, sort of, you know, broke.
Indeed, I recall a couple of years ago, a literal billionaire (can't remember his name now) was interviewed by a journalist and put in the same bracket as Trump. The exchange went something along the lines of:
"Because when we talk about billionaires like yourself, Donald Trump..."
"Hahaha. Only one of us is a Billionaire."
And a friend of mine originally from New York (who has moved in finance industry circles) said it's common knowledge that Trump lives off credit.
Now this civil suit appears to be dragging those private rumours (/beliefs) out into the cold light of day.
Cue the Trump Rebrand 2.0... Jesus Trump.

Republican America now has a question to ask itself. Is it so drunk on Trumpism and devoid of self esteem that it's willing to look the other way if it becomes obvious the guy's a broke AF traitor? From the Rust-belt to the trailer parks to the churches of Texas - are they willing to reduce themselves to little more than groupies who tell themselves the cheating, lying, drug-addled guitarist that treats them like shit is the best they can do? Or all they deserve?
Put simply: faced with the choice of "accepting he's a financial fraud/traitor" OR going along with "Trump Is Q!" - will they take that leap with him? A Q-Jump, if you will.
Trump's Truth Social platform seems to suggest he is indeed expecting his millions of disciples to follow him...

That's it for now.
